A tragic story between Helena, a young Jewish prisoner in Auschwitz and the SS officer Franz Wunsch. Their forbidden relationship helps helps save Helena and her sister from the gas chambers but the sister's two children are left to die.

Years later, Franz calls on Helena to defend him against accusations of war crimes.
